This festival is enormously celebrated to bid a fond farewell to the cool and dry winds of winter and adore the symbolic arrival of spring. This festival is celebrated in distinctive forms and with different names in different states of India. In Haryana and Punjab, it is popularly called as Lohri, in South India it is called Pongal; in Bihar, it is called kichadi and in Assam, it is called Bihu. However, in Gujarat and other parts, the festival is majorly celebrated with kite-flying where families and friends gather along on the terrace on their respective houses to compete for the gliding kites with neighborhoods or friends.
