Nearly 40% of Vadodara was submerged for over three days in late August 2024 due to floods caused by the Vishwamitri River, a study by the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) revealed, as reported by a newspaper. To address the issue, the SEIAA has approved the Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s (VMC) Vishwamitri River rejuvenation project, which involves desilting and dredging to increase the river’s carrying capacity while protecting its aquatic life, including mugger crocodiles. The SEIAA, following recommendations from the State-level Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC), has mandated the completion of desilting and debris removal by August 2025. This is expected to boost the river’s capacity to 1,100 cumecs, reducing flood risks by 51%. The project must comply with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order of May 2021, which emphasized the demarcation and restoration of the river’s floodplain and the removal of unauthorized constructions. ........
