Building from scratch would be the first preference of all architects…nothing like starting with a blank slate and planning every space down to the last inch. However, in this Vadodara project, Manoj Patel of his eponymous studio had to start work with a basic structure and work his magic around it. Surrounded by existing dwellings, this 2,500-square-feet corner site has an L-shaped road on two sides. “We tried not to alter too much. The interior spaces were rather small, so we opened them up with basic civil changes,” says Patel. “Since the orientation of the 3,200-square-feet structure itself was appropriate, we increased the size of the windows to invite more natural light and air. Since there is an existing common plot on one side, all fenestrations have been designed in that direction, to have a link with nature.
